A Week of Blue Jay Comedy

Posted by rich on November 29, 2007

As a continuing celebration of the Toronto Blue Jays marketing team, here is the commercial that center fielder Vernon Wells did.  Note to self: Don’t play hide and seek with Vernon Wells.

Why Vernon Wells? Why?

vernon-wells-custom.jpgVernon Wells agreed to a $126 million extension with the Toronto Blue Jays late Friday night. I’m extremely proud for Wells, as he now can walk to the local McDonald’s and order 252 million apple pies (without tax). However, I am not proud for Wells because of the fact that he chose to stay with the Toronto Blue Jays.

First of all, have fun Vernon Wells, as you will be spending the next 8 summers in Canada. Second, I know damn well that Wells and the Blue Jays won’t win a division title in that time. Seriously, even my grandparents could tell you that the Toronto Blue Jays won’t win the AL East in the next 8 years. The division belongs to the New York Yankees and the Boston Red Sox.

I really don’t see the incentive for Wells to stay in Toronto as well. Don’t get me wrong, it was all good when the Jays dominated in the early 90’s. But let’s not forget, that was 15 years ago. Fans knows that he’ll be good for 40 jacks, 120 RBIs, and a couple of gold gloves. So why not do that in a city that actually competes for a ring year in and year out?

Vernon Wells’ main reason for signing was to help out the organization and make a change. “How can you not be happy? This gives me a chance to do something special in Toronto that hasn’t been done in awhile,” he said. Well I can think of a reason not to be happy: You’re still playing for the Toronto Blue Jays. Wells was raised and currently lives in Texas, so why not look into the Houston Astros?.

All in all, I think Vernon Wells is one of the game’s top three outfielders. I am very excited for him because he deserves the fat extension. But come on Vernon, you’re just not going to win in Toronto. I wish Wells and the Blue Jays luck. But I don’t expect much of them and their 16th ranked payroll, especially when they play in a division with the top 2 payrolls in baseball.
