Just like last season and last week, the Sportable staff will be sitting in the press box at historic Qualcomm Stadium. We’ll be blogging all of the action during tonight’s Holiday Bowl matchup between Texas and Arizona State. We’ll talk about what’s happening on the field and in the press box.
Kickoff is set for 5 p.m on ESPN. The bowl season has already produced some late thrills (even last night’s Motor City Bowl was incredible). The Holiday Bowl is usually one of the better games on the slate. Let’s hope we’re in store for another classic.

College football is all about tradition. It’s fairly easy to distinguish the powerhouse schools and the also-rans just by looking at their uniform. While the NFL certainly has teams that stay loyal to their uniforms (Raiders and Steelers), college football is far more reliant on its tradition. Below are my five favorite college football uniforms.
1. Penn State Nittany Lions. I used to hate this jersey because it was so plain. But as the years have gone on, its grown on me. There’s not much to it. At home, the Joe Pa’s squad runs out of the tunnel in the same thing they’ve donned for years: A blue jersey with white lettering on top of white pants and a white helmet. Simple, but effective. Penn State refuses to change things over time. Coach Paterno is old enough to remember killing woolly mammoths, and their uniforms have stood the test of time.
2. LSU Tigers. Besides the Cajun fanbase, I’m a fan of all things LSU. I’m a big fan of Death Valley, their fight song as well as their uniforms. Aside from their primary white jerseys, worn in most games, LSU also rocks a purple jersey. The jerseys also have their own tradition behind them. LSU only wears the purple jerseys for non-SEC games, excluding the home opener. Who knew there were so many rules?
3. Texas Longhorns. Orange doesn’t exactly have a rich history in college football (I’m looking at you, Syracuse.) But burnt orange is another story. The Longhorns are a team with rich history, whether its the Hook Em’ gesture, Bevo, Mack Brown getting bitch slapped by Oklahoma before Vince Young showed up and The World’s Largest Texas Flag.
4. Notre Dame Fighting Irish. Homerism aside, few things represent college football more than Notre Dame’s gold helmets, which receive a fresh coat of paint before every game. The tradition of the gold helmets coincides with the famed “Golden Dome” on the campus. The Irish also wear a green jersey on occasion. They’ll wear it again for this year’s meeting with USC.
5. Florida Gators. Florida’s tradition revolves more around winning than keeping the same uniform. The Gators often fall victim to some awful ideas by Nike, who attempt to innovate college football by ruining good looking uniforms. Whether it’s the home blues or road whites, the Gators look sharp. They’ve even worn a throwback that’s badass.

There’s nothing not to like about the Big 12 championship battle that is taking place on Sunday. Seemingly annual powerhouse Kansas, who is currently ranked second in the nation, faces off against young and talented Texas in a game that will undoubtedly be phenomenal.
Texas is a fantastic team to watch play because, unlike most teams in the tournament, Texas is incredibly young, boasting two star freshman in DJ Augustin and Kevin Durant. As we’ve noted before on Sportable, we are running out of words to use to describe Durant. His uncanny ability to take over games is unprecedented in the NCAA this season and, like Carmelo Anthony did for Syracuse in 2003, Durant has the potential to lead the Longhorns to an NCAA championship. DJ Augustin is the other freshman for Texas who has proven over the past few months that he can help Durant carry this team. Augustin averages nearly 15 points and 7 assists a game for the Longhorns, a big boost provided that he is a freshman.
Unfortunately for Texas, they face a tough rival in the Kansas Jayhawks. Led by Brandon Rush and Julian Wright, the Jayhawks look to take not only the Big 12 Conference title, but the NCAA title as well. Rush is a fantastic guard, averaging 12 points a game for the Jayhawks while his teammate Wright leads the team in rebounds and averages 12 points a game. Along with Mario Chalmers, this team may form the best 1-2-3 combination in the NCAA. Chalmers proved his worth against Kansas St in the tournament finals, going for 16 points and starting the second half with two pivotal three pointers that got the Jayhawks rolling towards an eventual finals birth.
Expect this game to be the finest of all the championship games this Sunday. I will stand by the fact that, though Ohio State and Wisconsin match up yet again in a battle of two of the top three teams in the nation, the Big 12 has the best basketball in the NCAA and Texas vs Kansas will be a definite game to watch. Whether it’s Durant taking over or the Kansas three-step of Chalmers, Rush, and Wright take over, this game will be the best on Sunday.

The best of tonight’s college basketball action will take place in Texas, as the Texas A&M Aggies will head to Austin to face the Longhorns in a battle that will surely go down as one for the ages. What’s at stake tonight? Well, for Texas, it’s an opportunity to avenge an 18 point loss at the hands of the Aggies in College Station earlier this month. For the Aggies, it’s an opportunity to make a run at a number one seed in the tournament, and a season sweep of the hated Longhorns.
For the Longhorns, it’s all about Kevin Durant. If you haven’t watched him play at all this year, take the time to watch this kid play tonight. He’s an absolute freak. Imagine Kevin Garnett with the ability to make a shot from anywhere on the floor. Thats Durant. Don’t sleep on freshman D.J. Augustin either. He runs this offense, and is averaging 12 points a game for the Horns, which is pretty impressive as a frosh. The inside game is where the Horns may get burned tonight. Aside from Durant, they don’t have much else in the paint and, if Durant struggles to get rebounds (which he probably wont), don’t expect much from the other guys. Conner Achtley is the oldest guy in the front court, and he’s only a sophomore.

I really love these investigations done by Yahoo Sports. They’ve done a couple on Reggie Bush, which conveniently got pushed out of the spotlight. What ever became of that anyway? Their latest report is on the Rose Bowl Game between USC and Texas…played in January. It’s now November. Tons of the players involved in that game are playing in the NFL or have graduated. The game was one of the best ever played…and it was won by Texas. Why are we still talking about this game?
Apparently USC and Yahoo are a bit butthurt about a couple of missed calls in the game. The first was Reggie Bush’s fumble following his lateral. At the time, it was a very very close call that wasn’t challenged. Okay, so the replay system is flawed. The officials did nothing wrong, they called it like they saw it. They made a borderline call and went in favor of Texas. After that, it’s up to the replay officials in the booth. Bush’s decision to lateral the ball was idiotic ten months ago and it still is today. I don’t remember there being an uproar about that call during the game. Why is there an uproar now?
The other play was Vince Young’s lateral to Selvin Young, resulting in a touchdown. Replays showed that Young’s knee was down. But come on. Do you really think USC was going to stop Young on that drive? They proved they had no answer for him the rest of the game. Why would this drive have been any different? Vince Young was simply unstoppable during the Rose Bowl. His 467 yards should make that pretty clear.
The 2006 Rose Bowl should be remembered as one of the greatest college football games ever played. It featured three of the best college football players in history. It also featured one of the best performances in a championship game by any player in any sport. Yahoo Sports needs to stop this garbage. USC lost to a better team and a godlike performance from Vince Young. We don’t know if a couple of missed calls would have changed anything. Show me a game that doesn’t have a couple bad calls. It’s part of sports. USC fans need to deal with it.
