Tell Sportable: Where’s A-Rod Rank In Baseball History?

Posted by rich on September 18, 2008

Alex Rodriguez hit his 35th home run and drove in his 100th RBI the other day, making it the 12th straight season he’d done so.  In accomplishing this feat, A-Rod passed Babe Ruth as the only player to ever do such a thing.  “Passed Babe Ruth”…Now there’s a phrase that cements an accomplishment as legendary.  So where do you rank Alex Rodriguez in the history books?  Exactly how great is this guy considering his accomplishments and his post season failures?

Tell Sportable: Who is the Most Exciting Athlete to Watch

Posted by rich on April 21, 2008

LaDainian Tomlinson. Jose Reyes. Kobe Bryant. Alexander Ovechkin. Across the four major sports, there are countless athletes that light it up when they take the field. Everyone has their favorite players to watch; whether it be from someone’s favorite team or just some athlete that is a human highlight reel. So tell Sportable: Who is your favorite athlete to watch? Who takes it to that next level every single time?

My answer? LeBron James. I’m not particularly a Cavaliers fan nor am I a die-hard NBA fan but King James is without a doubt my favorite athlete to watch. His ability to quite literally take a game over at any given time combined with his freakish athletic talent make King James one of the best. Remember when he scored the last 25 points in that playoff game versus the Pistons? Exactly. Hail to the King.

Tell Sportable: How Do You Define A Sport

Posted by rich on January 18, 2008

skate or die

As part of a raging debate I’ve been having with some friends over the past few days, I’d like to open the discussion to the greater audience.  How do you define a sport?  Can it be determined by a judge or does there need to be an objective set of rules to determine a winner?  Where does poker lie?  How about rock climbing or skateboarding?  Tell us what you think.

Tell Sportable: Will Vince Young Boom or Bust in Year Two?

Posted by rich on August 31, 2007

youngThere’s a lot to make of Vince Young and the Tennessee Titans in 2007. They’ve faced a hoard of media attention involving PacMan Jones’ legal troubles and amongst the many questions surrounding this team (Playoffs?) are the expectations and criticisms of Vince Young as he goes into his second season. Young is one of those athletes that seems to polarize sports fans with either love or hate. While I’ll admit that my feelings about Young in college were far from positive, he has certainly proven me wrong and changed my opinions in just one season in the NFL. The question remains, can Vince duplicate the winning formula of last season and lead this team to the playoffs or will he fizzle and suffer a sophomore slump?

It’s my belief that Young’s sophomore season will be less than spectacular. I look at this Titans team that lost starting running back Travis Henry and cornerback PacMan Jones and already start to worry. PacMan is a head case. When he’s not causing trouble and is actually playing, however, he has game changing abilities. Look at last year against the Giants when Pacman had two interceptions and a crucial punt return that aided the Titans in overcoming a 21 point defecit. This defense hasn’t been a strong unit for a couple years now and losing Pacman, regardless of his mouth or antics, will hurt this team.

On offense the Titans did virtually nothing to improve themselves. They let Drew Bennett go despite him being the go-to guy for Young and the best receiver on the team. Running back Travis Henry walked and has now landed in Denver, leaving the Titans with a running back platoon of Chris Brown, LenDale White, and rookie running back Chris Henry. I’m not scared. Look, this offense was far from the greatest show on turf last year but they’ve certainly shown little interest in improving the unit as a whole for 2007.

It’s going to be tough for Young to duplicate the success of 2006. Maybe he’s one of those guys who doesn’t show much for statistics except the one that really counts; wins. Whatever he has, the odds will certainly be stacked against him this season. So tell Sportable; Do you think Vince Young will boom or bust in 2007?

Tell Sportable: Who are Your Fantasy Football Sleepers?

Posted by ryan on August 17, 2007

deveryhenderson.jpgLet’s be honest, we all want LaDainian Tomlinson on our team. But only one bastard is going to be lucky enough to land LT with the top choice in the draft. For the rest of us, we’re going to need all the help we can get. In many leagues, the guys drafted in the 10th or 11th rounds will make more a difference than the guy we take in the 1st round. Here are five of my sleepers.

Tell Sportable: Who are your Fantasy Football sleepers?

Devery Henderson: With Joe Horn now in Atlanta, look for the production of other Saints receivers to increase. Henderson had 32 catches last year and showed some incredible big-play ability that made it easier for the Saints to part with Horn. Eight of Henderson’s receptions went for 40 yards or more. His average of 23.3 yards a catch was the best in the NFL by a full four yards.

Jerious Norwood: It’s anybodys guess as to what will happen with the Atlanta Falcons’ offense. Michael Vick is likely going to jail and Warrick Dunn’s back injury is reducing his role. That leaves Norwood, who carried the ball 99 times in his rookie season. His average of 6.4 yards is one of the few bright spots in the ATL these days. Norwood should be worth a late-round selection, especially if the uninformed owner in your league snatches up Dunn.

Tell Sportable: What’s Your Favorite College Football Uniform?

Posted by ryan on August 3, 2007

College football is all about tradition. It’s fairly easy to distinguish the powerhouse schools and the also-rans just by looking at their uniform. While the NFL certainly has teams that stay loyal to their uniforms (Raiders and Steelers), college football is far more reliant on its tradition. Below are my five favorite college football uniforms.

tonyhuntjerz.jpg1. Penn State Nittany Lions. I used to hate this jersey because it was so plain. But as the years have gone on, its grown on me. There’s not much to it. At home, the Joe Pa’s squad runs out of the tunnel in the same thing they’ve donned for years: A blue jersey with white lettering on top of white pants and a white helmet. Simple, but effective. Penn State refuses to change things over time. Coach Paterno is old enough to remember killing woolly mammoths, and their uniforms have stood the test of time.

lsuwhites.jpg2. LSU Tigers. Besides the Cajun fanbase, I’m a fan of all things LSU. I’m a big fan of Death Valley, their fight song as well as their uniforms. Aside from their primary white jerseys, worn in most games, LSU also rocks a purple jersey. The jerseys also have their own tradition behind them. LSU only wears the purple jerseys for non-SEC games, excluding the home opener. Who knew there were so many rules?

vinsanityhorns.jpg3. Texas Longhorns. Orange doesn’t exactly have a rich history in college football (I’m looking at you, Syracuse.) But burnt orange is another story. The Longhorns are a team with rich history, whether its the Hook Em’ gesture, Bevo, Mack Brown getting bitch slapped by Oklahoma before Vince Young showed up and The World’s Largest Texas Flag.

bradyquinnbluend.jpg4. Notre Dame Fighting Irish. Homerism aside, few things represent college football more than Notre Dame’s gold helmets, which receive a fresh coat of paint before every game. The tradition of the gold helmets coincides with the famed “Golden Dome” on the campus. The Irish also wear a green jersey on occasion. They’ll wear it again for this year’s meeting with USC.

tebowblue.jpg5. Florida Gators. Florida’s tradition revolves more around winning than keeping the same uniform. The Gators often fall victim to some awful ideas by Nike, who attempt to innovate college football by ruining good looking uniforms. Whether it’s the home blues or road whites, the Gators look sharp. They’ve even worn a throwback that’s badass.
