Sonny’s Style Watch: The 76ers Restoration

Good news out of Philadelphia this week. No, it’s not about Raul Ibanez on roids or Jimmy Rollins getting benched! It comes to us from the hardwood, where the 76ers will dust off their championship jerseys for the 2009-10 season.

Awesome move here by the 76ers’ front office and the equipment staff. The 76ers’ old school basketball logo is one of the most recognizable logos in all of sports. It deserves to be dawned again. Andre Iguodala and first round draft pick Jrue Holiday seem to be pleased with the move.

I think it’s a good thing when teams go retro and I’m certainly a big fan. Philadelphia wore these jerseys from 1963-1997; possibly the longest jersey run aside from the Lakers and Celtics. The 76ers are doing their part and teams like the Rockets and Warriors should follow suit.

All in all, this is a perfect move by the 76ers organization. The franchise is set to release images of an updated court that the team will play on next year. A road jersey is also set for unveiling at a later date. But if I were to guess, it will probably look something like this.

Sonny’s Style Watch: MLB’s Stars and Stripes Lid

Sonny’s Style Watch is back after a long hiatus, just in time for Memorial Day Weekend. New Era and Major League Baseball have united yet again to produce a quality looking lid for us. Teams across the nation will wear these hats this weekend, as well as July 4th and September 11th.

Last year New Era created these same hats, but in blue. Every single team in the league will wear red hats this season, but it would be cool if they had a choice between red or blue.  If I had to choose between red and blue I would have to say that the red hats look better.

Obviously, the best thing about these hats is the waving flag within the logo. If the flag was motionless the hat might have looked dull. The Reds hat (above) is my favorite, but the Orioles and Rangers caps are among the best. If you were wondering about the Toronto Blue Jays, they didn’t get left out.

All in all, I think these fresh and innovative jersey ideas are cool for baseball. It’s nice to see the league take time out of their day to recognize this beautiful nation. I’ll be ordering my Brewers Stars and Stripes hat soon and you should pick up your favorite teams’ lid as well.

Sonny’s Stylewatch: Red Quarterback Practice Jerseys

Posted by sonny on August 10, 2008

I have attended some training camps in the past and have always had my eye out for those red quarterback jerseys. The Chargers have an excellent version that Philip Rivers wears during practice. That bolt with the red looks pretty cool. So with that said, some genius at NFL Shop has decided to put the jerseys up for sale at nflshop.com.

I know some of you out there might be saying this is simply incredibly stupid, but I think it’s a nice little thing up for sale. I knew there had to be some weirdos like me out there that wished they would sell these. Finally, the opportunity has presented itself.

Unfortunately the Philip Rivers jersey isn’t up for sale, but nflshop.com does have some nice choices (15) for you to select from. I really like the McNabb thread above, and I also love the the Saints Brees jersey. The rest of the jerseys are okay, but nothing too impressive.

All in all, the only problem I have with this idea is the limited teams available. I know teams with red jerseys probably shouldn’t have one, but at least make them for the rest of the teams. The NFL failed in doing that and they also failed in the price. I would rather throw my money at a Men’s Premier jersey which costs about $30.00 more. Great idea, but include more teams and lower the price.

Sonny’s Style Watch: Red Sox & Astros Go Green for Earth Day

Posted by sonny on April 25, 2008

The Boston Red Sox and Houston Astros displayed Earth Day awareness this past Tuesday. The two clubs took different routes, but both clubs showed they cared. I am surprised that more teams didn’t take part in the observance simply because it was being pushed by Major League Baseball.

In a nice gesture, the Boston Red Sox wore “Go Green” patches on their left sleeves in Tuesday night’s game against the Angels. The design is pretty cool, a nice initiative by the team to make a conscious effort for Earth Day.

Over in the National League the Houston Astros wore green hats in observance of Earth Day. The caps had a message on the side that read “Play Green”. Again just like the Red Sox I find it neat to see teams making a bit of an effort to do something nice on a day like Earth Day.

All in all, I really love what the Boston Red Sox and Houston Astros did. Hopefully, the actions of these two clubs start a movement for other teams to follow next year. The Red Sox “Go Green” jersey can be purchased at jersey-joe.com

Sonny’s Stlye Watch: Braves Add Road Uni and Cap

Posted by sonny on April 10, 2008

The Atlanta Braves have decided to mix things up a bit when traveling on the road this year. They will sport a new alternate uniform and cap. The Braves kept the new look quiet until Opening Night in Washington D.C last week. But since then, fans and players alike have welcomed the additions. The Braves made the call on the navy blue caps and jerseys for the first time since 1969. From 1966-1969 the Braves wore the same jersey and hat only during away games.

Beginning with the jersey, I must say the navy blue script which is outlined in white on the blue jersey really looks nice. The uni looks exactly the same as the current road grey with the tomahawk and everything, just with a different color scheme. The Braves haven’t worn a dark jersey in years except for in batting practice, so it is nice to see something different when they take the field.

The new hat is an exact replica of the current home cap, only without the traditional red bill. Throughout the Braves existence, they have always sported a clean look. Sharp unis with subtle hat have always been their trademark. This throwback hat is exactly that. The clean-cut look will be seen on the road, but I would also like to see the Braves wear the hat at Turner Field.

All in all you can’t complain if you are a fan of the Braves. The additions are fantastic and I can only imagine that they’re flying off shelves everywhere. The new additions leaves the Braves with three different hats and a total of four jerseys. The Braves haven’t said whether they will keep the unis around for years to come, but I think it’d be a great idea

Vicious Hawk Attack Leaves Girl Injured, Others Puzzled, and Me Laughing.

Posted by rich on April 7, 2008

When you talk about the Boston Red Sox and New York Yankees, history as well as tradition and coincidence are variables that have to come into play. I’ve read some strange things that connect these two teams, but this story may take the proverbial cake. A 13 year old girl named Alexis Rodriguez was with her school touring Fenway Park when a hawk swooped from the heavens to maliciously attack her.

Isn’t it an interesting parallel that the girl’s name is eerily similar to Yankee’s short stop Alex Rodriguez and that A-Rod wears the number 13? Was this a message by the ghosts of past Red Sox lore to a young girl? But instead of getting caught up in all the ironies of the story, we should take a step back and look at the bigger picture here.

A. What the hell is a hawk doing in downtown Boston? I’m not from the area, so I could be wrong about my assumptions that hawks don’t patrol the skies of any major city especially Boston. B. Did the hawk mistake the girl for a young rodent or rabbit? How does this kind of thing even happen? I can only imagine the scene that must have ensued both leading up to the attack and following it. “Okay kids, does anyone know what this foul pole is called? That’s right, Pesky’s Pole. It was named after- CACAWWWWWWWWW swoooosh.” The pandemonium that followed must have been epic.

Take this as a warning, Alex. Next time you try and bring your MVP hardware and your 54 home runs into Fenway, you will get attacked by a bird. On that note of karma, can I get someone in the Bay Area named Berry Bonds or Bart Bonds who is willing to get attacked by a seal for karma’s sake?

Note: I don’t think young children getting hurt is funny. I think the irony of a hawk attacking anyone or anything in a setting like Fenway is funny.

Second Note: We apologize for the goofy picture alignments some articles have had. The new WordPress is awful. We’re trying to sort out the issues.
