UEFA EURO 2008 Team Preview: Portugal

With the UEFA EURO 2008 tournament from Austria-Switzerland just days away, the Sportable staff will bring you team previews leading up to the opening match. Group by group, we will discuss team rosters, flaws. and chances of being crowned European Champions.

Group A Matches:
June 7th: vs. Turkey (Stade de Geneve - Geneva)
June 11th: vs. Czech Republic (Stade de Geneve - Geneva)
June 15th: vs. Switzerland (St. Jakob Park - Basel)

The above slogan on the Portugal team bus reads, “This coach is driven by the will to win.” If that is the case, I sure hope Cristiano Ronaldo is the man behind the wheel. Ronaldo, who averages a goal nearly every other match with the national team, must lead this squad throughout June. Everything starts with the 23-year-old, who scored 42 goals this season for Manchester United. Can Portugal build on their second place finish from 2004 or will they dance their way out of Austria and Switzerland early? If Portugal suffer a disappointing finish, look for ex Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho to be roaming the sidelines beginning in September for 2010 Wold Cup qualifiers.
