Sonny’s Stylewatch: The Awful Oregon Ducks Helmets

Posted by sonny on January 4, 2007

oregon-helmets-custom.jpgWhat the hell was Oregon wearing on their head in the Las Vegas Bowl? I think I almost puked when they took the field against BYU that night. When they came out of the tunnel wearing these hideous helmets I wished they would have turned around and just grabbed these.

I knew that Orgeon had 3 different helmets to choose from going into the season, as well as 4 different types of jerseys. Plus, they had 4 different types of pants. It was possible for somebody to play four years and never have the same uniform combination. So much for tradition in college football. However, the Ducks never wore the yellow or white helmet, which is sad because I liked those.

It sucks for people that bought the Las Vegas Bowl t-shirt because Oregon didn’t even wear those helmets. And what did Oregon even see in these helmets in the first place? The color is an off-set gold or yellow that doesn’t even really match with the normal colors. Its pretty sad how the Ducks didn’t even put an “O” on the side of the helmet. Oh wait they did, but they put it directly in the back. Very ugly.

I know Nike has lots of influence on Ducks gear because the headquarters are very close to the campus in Eugene. However that doesn’t mean you can use the Ducks as guinea pigs to test out gear and jerseys. The Ducks have an image to protect, as well as playing good football. If you look good and feel good, you play good. Oregon has neither going for them right now.

The helmet choice was a mistake and Oregon should have looked at themselves in front of a mirror before taking the field. The helmet should never be released for sale or worn ever again. The University has some thinking to do with Nike. They should also ditch the armor design on the shoulder pads and knee caps. But that’s another article in itself.

A Look at The Last Unbeatens

Posted by ryan on December 23, 2006

collison-vs-michigan-custom.jpgThen they’re were four. We’re down to four undefeated teams in college basketball and a couple teams on that list are very surprising. Surprisingly, we don’t have an undefeated mid-major team on the list, partly because those tough small conferences like the Missouri Valley Conference and Mountain West Conference are scheduling tough opponents to start the year and their name out on the national radar.

UCLA: Every time I watch the Bruins play, I’m more impressed with them. Today was no exception, as they teabagged Michigan. They seem to be doing just fine despite the departure of Jordan Farmar. They’ve already beaten three ranked teams, including two in during their Maui Invitational win. They’re getting four guys to average in double digits, including Aaron Afflalo, a guy that could be on some All-American teams when the year is over. It’ll be interesting to see how they handle Washington’s phenom freshman Spencer Hawes. But Luc Richard Mbah a Moute should be up to the test. If he isn’t, they can just have Lorenzo Mata look at him. Mark your calendars for January 20th, when Arizona will visit Pauley Pavillion. Read the rest of this entry »
