College football is all about tradition. It’s fairly easy to distinguish the powerhouse schools and the also-rans just by looking at their uniform. While the NFL certainly has teams that stay loyal to their uniforms (Raiders and Steelers), college football is far more reliant on its tradition. Below are my five favorite college football uniforms.
1. Penn State Nittany Lions. I used to hate this jersey because it was so plain. But as the years have gone on, its grown on me. There’s not much to it. At home, the Joe Pa’s squad runs out of the tunnel in the same thing they’ve donned for years: A blue jersey with white lettering on top of white pants and a white helmet. Simple, but effective. Penn State refuses to change things over time. Coach Paterno is old enough to remember killing woolly mammoths, and their uniforms have stood the test of time.
2. LSU Tigers. Besides the Cajun fanbase, I’m a fan of all things LSU. I’m a big fan of Death Valley, their fight song as well as their uniforms. Aside from their primary white jerseys, worn in most games, LSU also rocks a purple jersey. The jerseys also have their own tradition behind them. LSU only wears the purple jerseys for non-SEC games, excluding the home opener. Who knew there were so many rules?
3. Texas Longhorns. Orange doesn’t exactly have a rich history in college football (I’m looking at you, Syracuse.) But burnt orange is another story. The Longhorns are a team with rich history, whether its the Hook Em’ gesture, Bevo, Mack Brown getting bitch slapped by Oklahoma before Vince Young showed up and The World’s Largest Texas Flag.
4. Notre Dame Fighting Irish. Homerism aside, few things represent college football more than Notre Dame’s gold helmets, which receive a fresh coat of paint before every game. The tradition of the gold helmets coincides with the famed “Golden Dome” on the campus. The Irish also wear a green jersey on occasion. They’ll wear it again for this year’s meeting with USC.
5. Florida Gators. Florida’s tradition revolves more around winning than keeping the same uniform. The Gators often fall victim to some awful ideas by Nike, who attempt to innovate college football by ruining good looking uniforms. Whether it’s the home blues or road whites, the Gators look sharp. They’ve even worn a throwback that’s badass.

When the Cleveland Browns traded up to land Brady Quinn 22nd overall, they expected a quarterback that came from a big-time program with a history of winning playing in big games. But not even a week after drafting him, they’ve learned something about their new franchise quarterback: He loves touching his friends’ package.
We found this out thanks to a story on Deadspin. Somewhere, Charlie Frye is laughing his ass off. They’re replacing me with this guy? If it wasn’t for his hands all over his friend, Quinn would just look like a typical frat boy. Hours at the gym, pink shirt, and a love for football. But this is all a bit too much.
Joe Thomas is lucky. He won’t be bending over in front of Quinn because he plays left tackle. However, if Thomas does a nice job in protecting Quinn’s blind side, he can expect the same treatment as a token of Quinn’s gratitude. Some running backs buy cars for their offensive linemen but Brady is going to do them all one better. He’s going to feel up Joe Thomas.
To top it off, there’s another picture of the madness that took place at this random golf course. This time, it’s Quinn and four friends, not just two. This set of photos (hopefully, no more are released) makes his other notable photo shoot look like harmless fun. If this doesn’t scare AFC North rivals, I don’t know what will.

USC’s victory over Notre Dame all but solidified their slot in the National Championship Game. This was a statement game by the Trojans, much like their game last year against Notre Dame and there are a few things I have noticed.
First, the entire national media needs to get off of Notre Dame’s jock. We see this year in and year out. Regardless of how good Notre Dame is, the national media jocks them to no end. I’m not saying they aren’t a good team, they just get far too much love regardless of the product that they put out on the field.
There is talk of Notre Dame getting a rematch against Michigan in the Rose Bowl and to be blunt, this is flat out stupid. Notre Dame has not earned that spot in the Rose Bowl. They may have only lost two games, but one of those games was an absolute demolition by the Wolverines while this loss to USC certainly wasn’t their best effort. Their wins have come against the three military academies and other such “powerhouses”. Give Florida a match against Michigan, hell give undefeated Boise State a shot at Michigan but do not give Notre Dame a rematch. They were already smashed once, and they have done nothing to prove that the same thing wouldn’t happen again.
USC has re-established themselves as one of the best teams in the nation. People forget the whopping that SC put on Arkansas at the beginning of the year. They have played one of the toughest schedules in college, beating Cal, Nebraska, Oregon, Notre Dame, and Arkansas. They may have lost to Oregon State, but they have rebounded with absolutely dominating performances in the toughest part of their schedule. They should have no problem manhandling UCLA and after that should easily move on to play for the national championship.
USC may not have Reggie Bush or Matt Leinart but John David Booty and Dwayne Jarrett certainly are a pretty good one-two punch. I look for them to put up a good fight against Ohio State. Add into that mix the scary fast defense that USC has and you have one of the best teams in the nation. Contrary to what many people thought this defense wasn’t caught over pursuing on counters, screens, and draws. USC came out tonight and proved that they can keep up with any team in the nation. They aren’t the stereotypical soft, no-defense Pac-10 team, and tonight, USC proved that they deserve to play for the National Championship.

If you missed Notre Dame vs. USC last year, you missed possibly the best game in any sport in the last 5-10 years. I certainly haven’t seen a game that good. Tons of future NFL players, national championship implications, and two great coaches. It was truly a classic, one that lived up to the hype. For some reason, this game hasn’t gotten the same amount of hype. I guess you can’t shove a matchup down somebody’s throat two weeks in a row (OSU-Michigan last week). Here’s a highlight video/tribute to the USC-Notre Dame classic from a season ago.
