Mr. Met Loves Indians, Bhangra

Posted by ryan on August 26, 2007

Two videos of mascot dancing this week alone? Are we that lucky? This clip came to me on a forum. It features Mr. Met showing up at an Indian wedding. The groom was apparently a diehard Mets fan. Mr. Met helps them cut the cake and when the lights go down, he cuts up the dance floor as well.

One Steroid User Comes Back

Posted by kevin on May 30, 2007

Guillermo Mota, one of the more curious off season signings, is set to make his debut for the Mets this week. Mota was suspended 50 games after testing positive for a performance enhancing drug and had to serve that suspension at the beginning of this season. For some reason the Mets signed him anyway.

I will be interested to see how the fans and the players react to Mota returning. I have to imagine that the fans won’t care, but how can the players accept someone like that? Unless the rest of them have done ‘roids, or realize that it is so prominent, that they can’t get offended about it. Every indication from the players is that they’re willing to take him back. I understand that he can help the team, there is no doubt that he is a very good reliever, I would be a bit skeptical about his involvement. I guess it’s better than pulling a Roger Clemens and just deciding to show up midway through the season for a team that happens to be winning.

Mota may make his first appearance of the year against the Giants, which would be incredibly ironic, especially if he faces Barry Bonds. I think the problem is that so many fans don’t even know about Mota taking steroids that they won’t care. There is a huge outrage about Jason Giambi and Barry Bonds because they are high profile players. No one cares about relievers, and that is why he can get away with this.

An Interesting Way of Team Bonding

Posted by kevin on May 9, 2007

The Mets aren’t doing terrible this year, at least not in my opinion. They find themselves in a tie for first with the Atlanta Braves, far from a situation that calls for drastic actions to change their fortunes. The Mets went ahead and did that anyway yesterday. All but four players shaved their domes in this strange bonding experience.

I have nothing wrong with team gimmicks, and I think that this idea is great, I just have to question the timing. The Mets aren’t doing bad, they don’t need a slump busted, but they went and did it anyway. I guess it shows that they have a ton of clubhouse chemistry, minus the exceptions of Jose Reyes, Aaron Heilman, Aaron Sele, and Tom Glavine. Glavine was given a pass because it was his day to take the mound, but I expect to see his head shaved soon, no one else has an excuse. I wonder if the other New York team will follow their lead and try to promote some clubhouse chemistry. That could be difficult with you know who coming to town.

Maybe we’ll see the Mets go off on a tear, hopefully it doesn’t get to the point where they are shaving other body parts as a team. As long as they keep it to their head (and I’ll allow facial hair) then it’s all in good fun. Once it goes beyond that, and let’s hope it doesn’t, it starts to get sketchy. For now, we can all enjoy the new look Mets.

Flashlights and Baseball Games Don’t Mix

Posted by kevin on April 22, 2007

A New York Mets fan is now facing criminal charges for using a flashlight to try to distract the Atlanta Braves. The fan, Frank Martinez supposedly used the light and shined it in the eyes of Braves pitcher Tim Hudson and shortstop Edgar Renteria. That leads to two separate criminal charges, and complete embarrassment for Martinez.

Here’s the worst part: he did this well into the game when the Met’s were already down 7-0 and had little, or no chance of winning the game. I don’t understand why anyone would possibly do this, let alone a 40 year old fan. You would think that after that many years of going to baseball games you would know what to do, and what not to do. Also you would hope he would be mature enough to know not to do something as stupid as that. It’s similar to when LeBron James was complaining about someone trying to shine a laser pointer in his eye when he was shooting free throws in Atlanta.

It isn’t the place of the fans to affect the outcome of a game, unless it is via noise. To take a light and shine it in someones eye is not only dangerous, it’s just flat out stupid. Hopefully this guy enjoys paying his fine and whatever other debt he has to pay to society.

Mets on Pace for 162 Wins

Posted by ryan on April 2, 2007

glavine-ownage-custom.jpgAre the Mets the best team ever assembled? After beating the Cardinals 6-1 on Major League Baseball Opening Night, they’re on pace for the best season in baseball history…for now. Tom Glavine, who is set to become as old as dirt next month, dazzled a sold out Busch Stadium, allowing just a run in six innings. No Pedro? No problem.

“The day was beautiful, the fans were receptive,” La Russa said. “I was overwhelmed.”

Nobody knows if the overwhelming atmosphere caused skipper Tony La Russa to black the hell out. But let’s hope so. There’s a reason defending champions often come out flat in the first game. The all-time greats are there, rings are given out, and there’s lots of standing ovations and stirring speeches. This seemed to inspire the Mets, who feel they should have been the ones being honored.

Fans might want to hold off on building shrines in honor of their fantasy roster. There were no homers last night but we did see some nice performances out of Carlos Delgado and Paul Lo Duca. Lo Duca called a stellar game for Glavine and drove in three runs. John Thomson is right, this guy totally sucks.

Sure, it’s just one game. But it’s great to see baseball back. In just two hours, we’ll be settling in for the Yankees-Devil Rays and a full slate of baseball. Happy Opening Day everybody.

Cardinals Mets Preview: MLB 2k7

Posted by rich on April 1, 2007

tom glavineIn light of tonight’s opening game that pits the Cardinals against the Mets, I’ve taken the game to Major League Baseball 2k7 in hopes of getting a glimpse and preview of what will happen tonight. Without further ado, the results.

Cardinals 0, Mets 4.

Winning Pitcher: Tom Glavine

Losing Pitcher: Chris Carpenter

In a match up of two great pitchers, the Cardinals and Mets played a low scoring start to the year. It was Tom Glavine, not Chris Carpenter, who looked like a Cy Young award winner, showing off shades of his 1998 award winning year. Glavine kept the potent Cardinals offense at bay, going the distance for a complete game seven hit shut out. Albert Pujols, who refuses to be silenced at the plate regardless of the score, still knocked out two hits to lead the team. World Series MVP David Eckstein, who during the Series was so clutch in getting rallies started, struggled at the plate going 0-4 with a strike out.

The Mets started the scoring in the second inning when second baseman Jose Valentin took Carpenter deep for a two run home run. Mets catcher Paul LoDuca followed Valentin’s lead, slugging a home run of his own in a three run second inning. That was all Carpenter would allow, as he settled down and struck out four in five innings. The Mets struck again in the top of the ninth as Carlos Delgado, who had a monster game with 3 hits including a double, smacked a home run off reliever Braden Looper. For the sake of my fantasy team, Carlos Beltran better not hang an 0-4 like he did in this game.

Now, I don’t claim that MLB 2k7 will produce the exact results of tonights game. If this game is any indication, however, it should be a good one tonight in St Louis.
