These are a collection of thoughts I’ve had about the world of sports the past few days. None of them really deserve a full length article, so they’re all just kinda thrown together here.
I’m not quite sure what the Dodgers are trying to do with their offer to Manny Ramirez. It’s rumored to be two years for $45 million. I understand the concept of low balling to start of negotiations, but I get the feeling that Scott Boras is going to do to that offer what manager Lou Brown did to Roger Dorn’s contract in Major League, that is, take a piss on it.
Major League Baseball should probably take away the San Diego Padres right to call themselves a major league organization. The only players who matter in San Diego (Jake Peavy, Adrian Gonzalez, and Trevor Hoffman) have all indicated that they have at least some interest in playing elsewhere because the team apparently has no plans to try to win.
These reports that MLB would never let Mark Cuban buy the Cubs are somewhat troubling to me. If he is the highest bidder (which is probably a safe bet) why not let him buy the team? Apparently Bud Selig is afraid of having an owner who will have the guts to stand up and say how bad he sucks as a commissioner.
It’s probably a safe bet to say that if Nick Saban went to Washington he could make the Huskies a contender within 3 years, right? It’s also probably safe to assume he isn’t going to stay at Alabama for too long, he doesn’t exactly strike me as the loyal type.
I’m wonder what sort of golf karma is going to hit this idiot. Here’s a guy who has recorded five hole-in-one’s in one week, something bad has to happen to him on the course right? He must have had the worst bounces ever seen to man for the past 10 years in order to deserve recording a hole in one five times in one week.

In case you didn’t notice yet, Jake Peavy is having an outstanding season thus far for the San Diego Padres. After a rocky 2006 season in which Peavy battled injuries, he has bounced back with an incredible start to his 2007 campaign.
To give you an idea of how well Peavy has pitched, I’m gonna throw out some numbers at you. After yesterday’s ten strike out performance against the Marlins, Peavy has gone three straight starts striking out ten or more batters. In his 46 innings pitched so far this year, he’s struck out a league high 56 batters, and has gone starts when he allowed just one hit versus the Marlins, two versus the Diamondbacks, and three versus the Dodgers. I’d say the old Jake Peavy who many people picked to contend for the Cy Young has returned.
When Peavy goes, the Padres go. It’s no secret that when he pitches well, the Padres play much better as a team. When Peavy and lanky bastard Chris Young (3-2, 3.34 ERA) are pitching well, it’s a tough draw in a three game series for any team. While the under achieving pathetic Padres lineup struggles to score runs, Peavy seems to remain a constant. I guess a 1.75 ERA helps when some games it seems like asking two runs from the Friars offense is asking too much. For now, sit back and enjoy the Alabama boy as he continues to carve up the National League.

There’s nothing like a lighthearted arrest story to improve somebody’s Friday afternoon. Unless your name is Jake Peavy, the guy who actually got arrested. Peavy was arrested yesterday in an incident at a airport in Mobile, Alabama. He was charged with disorderly conduct and released on $350 bond. It must have been real serious with a bond that high.
“Jake told me he said he’d move it as soon as he got his last bag into the terminal,” Katie Peavy said. “But the guard said a truck couldn’t be left at the curb without a driver.”
The security guard said she would have to write him a ticket. Katie said Jake responded, “Write me a ticket,” before saying “Call a real cop.”
It may not be the smartest thing to challenge a cop’s authority, even if they’re airport security. But Peavy did and he was arrested for it. I understand Peavy looks like a terrorist but maybe the cop should have just written the ticket. Then again, I doubt there’s much drama at an airport in Alabama. When you have the chance to own somebody, you have to take it.
The irony of it all? Peavy was on his way to the Dominican Republic for a Christian mission. I don’t know where “Thou shalt not double park” is mentioned in the Bible but there might be something about discipline and temper mentioned in there. I can’t say I blame Peavy though for being a bit edgy. San Diego’s big offseason splash was trading their young star second baseman Josh Barfield and replacing him with over-the-hill Marcus Giles, whose now reunited with his other formerly roided bro, Brian Giles.
