Not That You Care, But Bruce Arena Is Now Coaching David Beckham

Posted by sonny on August 17, 2008

With a playoff spot in reach, the Los Angeles Galaxy are expected to hire former U.S. National team coach Bruce Arena this week. Arena who did not have his contract renewed by the New York Red Bulls before the season started and was broadcasting for certain MLS events. It’s debatable whether or not this is a good move, and if you ask me Arena’s best years are behind him.

Bruce Arena was never anything special. He failed in elevating the U.S. Soccer Federation to an elite level. In typical fashion, Arena would qualify the U.S. for a World Cup berth and then fail once reaching the tournament. Is this the answer for a Galaxy team who is looking to get the playoffs after a 2 year drought?  If you ask me, the answer is a resounding no.

Has anyone ever given the thought of just not having a coach?  I guess someone would need to fill out the lineup card, but why not have David Beckham spread words of wisdom and just take the field?  Cobi Jones is patrolling the sidelines until Arena arrives at the Home Depot Center. I think keeping Jones as a head coach probably wouldn’t be that bad. He was played in 305 MLS games which should certainly count for something.  And his trademark dreadlocks would certainly be a hit with fans.

The Galaxy are on the verge of putting together a very competitive team and challenging for a third MLS title.  I have a hard time believing Bruce Arena is the final piece of the puzzle.

Finally! Beckham Starts, Scores, and Wins!

Posted by sonny on August 16, 2007

David Beckham put on a magical show last night as the Los Angeles Galaxy took down D.C. United 2-0 in?the semifinals of the ignaugural SuperLiga tournament. The Galaxy have not played up to par lately, but with the help of David Beckham in the starting lineup last night,?the 32 year-old?proved he could help out the team in more ways than one. Beckham can pass, shoot, and even take the role as captain for the Los Angeles side. Will this be a sign of things to come? I certainly think so!

Sports Roundup 7-24-07

sp_balcobell190mc.jpgIt looks like one of Bonds’s ex-girlfriends is going to be posing for Playboy. If you don’t remember Ms. Bell, here’s a refresher. Judging from her picture I wouldn’t classify her as a Playboy type, but with some Photoshop magic anyone can be on the cover of a magazine nowadays.

If you’re still interested in hearing more about Mr. Bonds, Larry Stone at the Seattle Times wrote a piece on the frustration he felt covering one of baseball’s most polarizing figures.

There’s an article by Live Science claiming to know the secret to baseball’s best hitters. Apparently it has to do with perception, our eyes, and other science-y shit.

Meanwhile, Kazakh cyclists are testing positive for doping. This bike is NOT black. (Sorry, couldn’t help myself)

It also appears that David Beckham is a vicious kangaroo hating, animal rights destroying lover of rare animal skin boots. Okay, so he might not be any those things, but it looks like the California Supreme Court is saying no to the previously Beckham-endorsed Predator boot in versions of Kangaroo red, Kangaroo eastern grey, and Kangaroo western grey.

StyleWatch: Jersey’s To Buy 7-12-07

Posted by sonny on July 12, 2007

ichiroRich’s Jersey To Buy: Ichiro This one’s obvious. He’s on the verge of inking a new 5 year deal with the Mariners and just won the All Star Game MVP. Thought he was becoming a free agent during the post-game ceremony did ya Jeanie Zelasko? Nope. He’ll probably be an M for life.

Sonny’s Jersey To Buy: David Beckham Becks will make his debut in Los Angeles tomorrow as a huge media conference awaits the superstar. Plus the Galaxy have just came out with some spanking new jerseys that have overtaken any other MLS jersey that has came out in the past. Be sure to grab your Beckham Galaxy jersey and suit up this summer.

buehrle.jpgKevin’s Jersey to Buy: Mark Buehrle. Buehrle doesn’t get the nod here for any specific reason other than he just cashed a huge payday. Buehrle has himself locked up with the White Sox organization for a few years now, and really made more money than he should have. If you want to get the jersey of a guy who’s guaranteed to be in the White Sox organization for awhile, this is the one.

Mr. Beckham Meets Mr. Bush

Posted by sonny on June 28, 2007

As David Beckham makes his way over to the states, he will be making some new friends along the way. Last week in Madrid, Reggie Bush flew out to meet his new friend and the two got to know each other more. The marketing giants got together to begin shooting some new Adidas commercials. Take a look as Beckham shows Bush some spot kick techniques and then watch how the two interact with some pads on.

Beckham Finally Recalled by England

Posted by ryan on May 26, 2007

beckhamlol-custom.jpgDavid Beckham has responded to being benched at Real Madrid and for the England national them in the best way possible. Since returning to the Madrid lineup, he’s shown the form that made him a world superstar. Real Madrid now sits in first place and Beckham is being rewarded: he’s been recalled to the English national them.

“Since Christmas his form has been very good, I think he can help us win in Estonia and that’s why I picked him. I feel at this moment, that for the Estonia game, we need experience and David certainly provides that. He is in very, very good form. The team needs that,” said England coach Steve McLaren.

It’s no secret that England’s recent play has been anything but spectacular, which happens to be the way Beckham is playing. They currently sit at 4th place in their Euro 2008 Qualifying group and have put in embarrassing performances against world powers like Macedonia and Israel. England’s squad has lacked identity for years despite having one of the most talented sides in the world. Beckham’s presence will be a huge positive.

With Beckham playing like a 20 year old again, it’s hard to imagine why he was ever benched to begin with. A bigger problem with the England national team has been the failure to find chemistry in their midfield. Despite having two superstars in Frank Lampard and Steven Gerrard, the two have never seemed to click for England. Aaron Lennon and Stewart Downing aren’t the answer. David Beckham just might be.
