Brian Moorman Has a Nice Payday

Posted by kevin on July 2, 2007

Brian Moorman inked a three year contract extension today extending his contract through the 2012 season. Moorman is slated to earn $10 million over the course of the next six years, which is probably a lot more money than a punter deserves. True, in comparison to some contracts the average of about $1.67 million he is to earn per year doesn’t seem to outrageous. But then you realize that he is a punter, and then you scratch your head wondering what the hell the Bills are doing.

I guess if your punter can take a hit like this he deserves a little pay increase, but I’m not sure about the amount that Moorman is making. He is clearly one of the best punters in the NFL, his statistics alone prove that, but when you also consider the fact that he plays in the hell hole known as Ralph Wilson Stadium in Buffalo, it certainly vaults him ahead of a few other guys. With that being said, I still don’t think that you can justify locking that much money up into a punter. What happens if he suddenly just starts to suck, we’ve seen this happen before, and then they get cut, which i guess is the same thing that could happen with the Bills, but they’ll already have more money invested in him than they need.

There is one thing that this affirms, more parents need to train their kids to be punters. It isn’t that hard to kick the ball, and if you can land yourself a $10 million contract over six years, then all the effort and humiliation that goes with being a punter will be overlooked. Then again your kid might turn out to be a violent person and assault his girlfriend, or even stab the person ahead of him on the depth chart. I guess these are the risks you have to take if you want to get your kid to the NFL.

Creating Holes, Filling Holes

takeo spikesThe Eagles made another step towards building a contender yesterday when they acquired linebacker Takeo Spikes and quarterback Kelly Holcomb from the Bills for defensive tackle Darwin Walker and a conditional draft pick in 2008. Spikes, who has the best football name ever, bar none, has been on a decline over the past two seasons due to age and injuries.

I’m still trying to map out the Bills off season plan for this year. This is a team that was contending for a playoff spot until the last weeks of the season, and instead of adding players to build a better team, they dump their defensive captain in Spikes, lose corner back Nate Clements to free agency, and trade Willis McGahee. The hell is going on? JP Losman was finally starting to evolve into the quarterback that people were hoping he would be, and that old bag Marv Levy rewards him by dealing McGahee, his partner in the backfield.

For the Eagles, this is a fantastic deal. Dhani Jones is too busy worrying about what kind of bow tie pattern he’s gonna spin off next and has yet to pan out at linebacker for the Eagles. Matt McCoy, a draft pick out of San Diego State, played well in his rookie campaign only to regress last year and eventually lose his starting job. Shaun Barber, a fairly underrated linebacker, also jumped ship and signed a free agent deal with Houston. I think Spikes can fit in perfectly into this defense, and will make an immediate impact along side Jeremiah Trotter.

Kelly Holcomb is a douche bag, but he’s a serviceable back up quarterback and the Eagles, after letting Jeff Garcia go, are in need of one. The Garcia move pissed me off because, despite the effort Garcia put in to turn the Eagles season last year and make the playoffs, he was rewarded with absolutely nothing. There’s a thing called loyalty, Philly, figure it out.? Regardless, the Eagles got a steal here and I’m sure Andy Reid and Chunky Soup are both pleased with the move.? As for Buffalo…have fun with Darwin Walker

Watchu Talkin Bout Tradin’ Willis?

willis mcgahee runningApparently everything in Buffalo isn’t as peachy as we thought it was. Bills head coach Dick Jauron has announced that the team will entertain offers for franchise running back Willis McGahee after McGahee had his worst season as a professional. McGahee, who ran for 1100 and 1200 yards in his first two seasons respectively, failed to break the century mark in the 2006 season and only found the end zone a mere 6 times.

Go ahead and throw the Bills hat in the ring for Oklahoma running back Adrian Peterson. Assuredly if they deal the former Miami star, they’ll be looking to make a big splash in the draft, and Peterson or maybe even Cal running back Marshawn Lynch would be their guy. McGahee, who once proclaimed he was the best running back in the NFL, fell short of that claim as well as the mark of mediocrity, the 1000 yard barrier. Hey Willis, keep your pie hole shut and worry about making the playoffs before you run your mouth. Better yet, worry about picking up that weak side blitz, because JP Losman spent most of the season staring at the defense from his ass.

I don’t know that trading McGahee would be the solution for the Bills offensive problems. Along with WR Lee Evans and progressing quarterback JP Losman, the Bills have a solid core on offense. Taking McGahee out of the mix would corrupt the chemistry and cohesiveness, if there is any, that’s forming between the trio. Maybe the Bills should worry about locking up corner back Nate Clements before they go dealing stars on the other side of the ball.
