Hey, If the moon was made of barbecue spare ribs, would ya eat it?  Hell, I know I would.  Then I’d polish it off with an ice cool Budweiser.  In this video, Braves reliever Will  Ohman goes Will Ferrell on the lineup card and does one of the most spot-on impressions of Harry Caray I’ve seen.  Props to The 700 Level for posting this, I couldn’t stop laughing.

Sportable Spot Episode 43: NL East

Posted by ryan on March 27, 2008

metsemo.jpg

Hosts: Sonny, Ryan and Rich: This episode focused solely on the National League East. With Johan Santana now in the mix in New York, can the Mets rebound from last year’s epic September collapse? Or will the Philadelphia Phillies, led by their three MVP candidates, make it two titles in a row? Or…will the Atlanta Braves return to the postseason after a two year drought? All of this and more on this episode of the Sportable Spot.

Note: You may have noticed we haven’t recorded podcasts for the AL Central and AL East. Those will be posted in the next few days, we had a slight mishap with the order of divisions.

A Team A Day [Day 17] Atlanta Braves Preview

Posted by ryan on March 26, 2008

braves-custom.jpgBraves Set to End Postseason “Slump”: After years of watching the Atlanta Braves play in October, the past two seasons without their presence have been tough to get used to. Sure, they only won a single World Series in that time. But their 14 consecutive division championships was a feat that may not be surpassed. Despite losing one of the icons of those champion runs in Andruw Jones, the Braves appear ready and able to return to the postseason behind a couple familiar faces.

Bats. Last season’s biggest acquisition, Mark Teixeira, was resigned for the 2008 season after a torrid second half with his new club. After four and a half great seasons in Arlington, Teixeira brought his big bat to the Dirty South and didn’t miss a beat. Now, in his first full season with the club, it’s not farfetched to predict an MVP caliber season from Tex. The middle of Hotlanta’s lineup is loaded with sluggers, so expect Teixeira to see plenty of pitches and drive in tons of runs.

Across the diamond is ageless wonder Larry Wayne Chipper Jones, who had one of the finest seasons of his great career in 2007. Jones hit .337 with 29 homers and 102 RBIs. That batting average was good for 2nd in the National League, just three points behind Rockies slugger Matt Holliday. When a 35-year-old future Hall of Famer is setting a career high in batting average, you know it’s a good year. Jones is getting up there in age and his body is usually prone for a trip to the disabled list every year. But if he can limit it to one trip rather than the two or three like in ‘05 and ‘06, the Braves will be much better off.

Bobby Cox Hates Umpires

Posted by rich on June 24, 2007

bobby coxAt first glance, Bobby Cox looks like a calm old bastard. Make a borderline call involving balls and strikes, however, and Cox blows up like a time bomb. Cox blows up to the tune of 131 ejections, tying the Major League record for career ejections by a manager. Cox tied the mark set by John McGraw in the early 1900’s, a record that has stood for nearly 80 years. Impressive stuff.

I can’t fault Cox for getting tossed yesterday. His Braves team was once at the top of the division and competing with the Mets for the best record in the NL. Now, his team is one game over .500 and the Braves have scored one run in four games. One freaking run. Tack that on to the new controversy swirling around Chipper Jones regarding him returning from injury too soon and you have a powder keg of tension in the ATL. And you have to wonder what Cox runs out there saying each time he does get run. For being ejected 131 times, he can’t be going out there dropping the same bombs he always drops on the umpires. It’d get old. I bet Cox has the most creative mouth in baseball.

I don’t think its a point of argument that Cox will eventually be in the Hall of Fame. Rattling off 14 straight division titles will earn you that distinction. For eons, Cox’s Braves have been the class of the National League. Now, they’re struggling to stay afloat and Cox’s blood pressure is rising with his age. At least Bobby has the ejection record, that’s something to put in your pocket and store away for a rainy day. The way Atlanta has struggled as of late, don’t be surprised to see that record number increase at a fairly rapid pace. That’s just how Bobby Cox rolls.

Andruw Jones Should Be Kicked In The Stomach

Posted by rich on June 23, 2007

andruwI believe I speak for every fantasy baseball owner who has Andruw Jones on their team in saying ‘What the hell man?’? What in the world is going on with Andruw?? Jones is hitless in his last 21 at bats and his batting average has dipped below .200.? For a guy who has been a centerpiece of an Atlanta organization since he was 19 and someone who is in a contract year this is probably not the way he invisioned his season going.? This isn’t the way anyone invisioned his season going.

He sucks right now.? Plain and simple.? He’s sucked all year.? Last year at this time Jones had 17 home runs and was hitting a modest .277.? This year he only has 11 home runs and is hitting .199.? Yikes.? Bobby Cox sat Jones the other day in hopes that a day off might spark him and break him out of his slump.? He responded with an 0-3 effort.

Jones and Carlos Zambrano were tagged as the two big name players who were in their contract seasons this year.? Despite early struggles, Zambrano has bounced back nicely with a couple stellar outings as of late.? Andruw hasn’t.? He already has struck out 73 times this season, a total that is abnormally high for him.? Lets be honest, this isn’t the same 19 year old that hit jacks against the Yankees in the World Series.? Here’s a guy who is watching millions of dollars go down the drain with every 0-4 performance he has.

What do you do with a guy like Jones who has struggled all season?? Tell him to grab some pine?? Probably not.? The only option the Braves have is to ride his slump out.? He’ll break out of it, they always do.? The matter at hand is when he will break out of it and if he can restore some confidence back into his game.? Right now, he’s dismal.? Right now, he’s flat out bad.? Right now he needs to fix it or he’s?going to find himself a disappointed man come next off-season.

Phillip Wellman: Manager/Grenade Enthusiast

Posted by ryan on June 2, 2007

On a day where Kevin talked about Joe Torre getting ejected to try and motivate his club, we’ve come across video of Phillip Wellman, the manager of the AA Mississippi Braves, completely losing his mind. You get the sense that Wellman was angry when he gets ejected. Then you knew he was angry when he threw 3rd base. After he crawled behind the pitcher’s mound and lobbed the resin bag like a grenade, you get the sense he’s a bit insane as well.
