Sonny’s Style Watch: Red Sox & Astros Go Green for Earth Day

Posted by sonny on April 25, 2008

The Boston Red Sox and Houston Astros displayed Earth Day awareness this past Tuesday. The two clubs took different routes, but both clubs showed they cared. I am surprised that more teams didn’t take part in the observance simply because it was being pushed by Major League Baseball.

In a nice gesture, the Boston Red Sox wore “Go Green” patches on their left sleeves in Tuesday night’s game against the Angels. The design is pretty cool, a nice initiative by the team to make a conscious effort for Earth Day.

Over in the National League the Houston Astros wore green hats in observance of Earth Day. The caps had a message on the side that read “Play Green”. Again just like the Red Sox I find it neat to see teams making a bit of an effort to do something nice on a day like Earth Day.

All in all, I really love what the Boston Red Sox and Houston Astros did. Hopefully, the actions of these two clubs start a movement for other teams to follow next year. The Red Sox “Go Green” jersey can be purchased at jersey-joe.com

Sonny’s Stlye Watch: Braves Add Road Uni and Cap

Posted by sonny on April 10, 2008

The Atlanta Braves have decided to mix things up a bit when traveling on the road this year. They will sport a new alternate uniform and cap. The Braves kept the new look quiet until Opening Night in Washington D.C last week. But since then, fans and players alike have welcomed the additions. The Braves made the call on the navy blue caps and jerseys for the first time since 1969. From 1966-1969 the Braves wore the same jersey and hat only during away games.

Beginning with the jersey, I must say the navy blue script which is outlined in white on the blue jersey really looks nice. The uni looks exactly the same as the current road grey with the tomahawk and everything, just with a different color scheme. The Braves haven’t worn a dark jersey in years except for in batting practice, so it is nice to see something different when they take the field.

The new hat is an exact replica of the current home cap, only without the traditional red bill. Throughout the Braves existence, they have always sported a clean look. Sharp unis with subtle hat have always been their trademark. This throwback hat is exactly that. The clean-cut look will be seen on the road, but I would also like to see the Braves wear the hat at Turner Field.

All in all you can’t complain if you are a fan of the Braves. The additions are fantastic and I can only imagine that they’re flying off shelves everywhere. The new additions leaves the Braves with three different hats and a total of four jerseys. The Braves haven’t said whether they will keep the unis around for years to come, but I think it’d be a great idea

Vicious Hawk Attack Leaves Girl Injured, Others Puzzled, and Me Laughing.

Posted by rich on April 7, 2008

When you talk about the Boston Red Sox and New York Yankees, history as well as tradition and coincidence are variables that have to come into play. I’ve read some strange things that connect these two teams, but this story may take the proverbial cake. A 13 year old girl named Alexis Rodriguez was with her school touring Fenway Park when a hawk swooped from the heavens to maliciously attack her.

Isn’t it an interesting parallel that the girl’s name is eerily similar to Yankee’s short stop Alex Rodriguez and that A-Rod wears the number 13? Was this a message by the ghosts of past Red Sox lore to a young girl? But instead of getting caught up in all the ironies of the story, we should take a step back and look at the bigger picture here.

A. What the hell is a hawk doing in downtown Boston? I’m not from the area, so I could be wrong about my assumptions that hawks don’t patrol the skies of any major city especially Boston. B. Did the hawk mistake the girl for a young rodent or rabbit? How does this kind of thing even happen? I can only imagine the scene that must have ensued both leading up to the attack and following it. “Okay kids, does anyone know what this foul pole is called? That’s right, Pesky’s Pole. It was named after- CACAWWWWWWWWW swoooosh.” The pandemonium that followed must have been epic.

Take this as a warning, Alex. Next time you try and bring your MVP hardware and your 54 home runs into Fenway, you will get attacked by a bird. On that note of karma, can I get someone in the Bay Area named Berry Bonds or Bart Bonds who is willing to get attacked by a seal for karma’s sake?

Note: I don’t think young children getting hurt is funny. I think the irony of a hawk attacking anyone or anything in a setting like Fenway is funny.

Second Note: We apologize for the goofy picture alignments some articles have had. The new WordPress is awful. We’re trying to sort out the issues.

Sonny’s StyleWatch: The New USA Away Jersey

Posted by sonny on March 27, 2008

laaaaaaaaandon-donooooooooovan-custom.jpgThe United States complemented their new home jersey with a spanking new away jersey yesterday. The new shirt must have good luck, as the boys took down Poland 3-0 in Krakow. The Americans will keep the away jersey through World Cup qualifying, which runs all the way until November 2009.

Upon first glance, I must admit that I really wasn’t blown away by the design. I know it’s a national team jersey, but in the past, we have seen some sort of fashion. Not here though. This jersey is just about as plain as you can get. It reminds me of Brazil’s and Russia’s uniforms. A typical template by Nike, but it works well for national teams who try to go with a traditional look.

I can see right now that there will be fans out there who will not approve of the new look. However, these supporters have to realize that when it comes to national team jerseys, there is no need to go flashy. Jerseys on this scale need not to be electric and flamboyant. They need to represent the country and I honestly believe that this jersey suits that purpose well.

All in all I am going to have say this new shirt is sharp and classy. It’s simple and provides U.S. soccer fans with a jersey they can be proud of. Also, don’t forget about the “don’t tread on me’‘ inscription on the inside collar; a nice little touch added by Nike which is also on the home jersey.

StyleWatch: Jerseys Not to Buy 3-6-08

javonwalkerjersey.jpgRyan’s Jersey Not to Buy: Javon Walker. Walker became yet another player getting more money than they deserve. He signed with the Raiders for over $50 million, proving, once again, that Al Davis hsa completely lost his mind. Have fun with your 30 catches and 4-12 finish, Javon.

chrisanderson.jpgSonny’s Jersey Not to Buy: Chris Anderson. Can someone please tell me why this guy is getting so much love since he returned. The dude is ugly as all hell and has no stats worth mentioning. If I’m New Orleans, I am kicking this guy off my team. I don’t care if he is a bench player. he can’t dunk, Kobe owns him and he likes drugs. Enough said!

jpRich’s Jersey Not to Buy: New York Jets. What the hell are the Jets doing right now? Do they think throwing loads of money at random talent will improve on their dismal season last year? There’s disgust among current players about money being paid to players who haven’t proven anything with the Jets and frankly I don’t see a concrete plan.

StyleWatch: Jerseys to Buy 3-6-08

lebronjersey123.jpgRyan’s Jersey to Buy: LeBron James. This MVP race is heating up to be one of the most exciting ever. A couple days after Kobe Bryant dropped 52 on national television against the Mavs, King James lit up Madison Square Garden for 50 points and 10 assists, exiting the game to a standing ovation from Knicks “fans.”

favre-jersey.jpgSonny’s Jersey to Buy: Brett Favre. I wore my Favre jersey yesterday and received a lot of positive feedback from people. Favre will go down in my mind as the quarterback who played consistently well while I was growing up. Thanks for the memories, Brett!

jwRich’s Jersey to Buy: Javon Walker. For not having done much in Denver, Walker sure hit the big money. His 6 year $55 million contract is bigger than Randy Moss’ contract with the Patriots and Walker will be given the opportunity to once again prove he can be a number one receiver. The only problem he’ll face aside from nagging injuries and lack of motivation is getting JaMarcus Russell to throw him the ball.
