The Holiday Bowl Blog Roll: The First Quarter
Posted by sonny on December 27, 2007
5:oo P.M. Upon arriving in the Press Box at Qualcomm Stadium Ryan and I struggled to get to our seats. This non-BCS match up has brought a lot of attention to San Diego. We find our seats and Texas has won the toss. They elect to receive and take the kick-off out to midfield.
5:07 P.M. Texas has no respect for that thing called the sideline. Mack Brown was nearly involved with the tackle on the kickoff at midfield and his entire staff has been covering the hash marks on the sideline during the opening drive.
5:10 P.M. Texas is not wasting any time. With short passes from Colt McCoy and a rush of 16 yards from junior running back Jamaal Charles, the Longhorns punched it in. McCoy was able to hook up with Derek Lokey on a play action pass from two yards out. The touchdown was the fastest in Holiday Bowl history. The drive lasted 8 plays for 49 yards for 1:21. 7-0 Texas.
5:13 P.M. A girl from the ASU newspaper staff is sitting right next to me. I mention her because she is hot as hell. Ryan also mentions that a girl in the cafeteria is also hot. Hopefully, we can score some digits.
5:15 P.M. The Sun Devils get the kick and secure a first down on their first set of downs. The ensuing set of downs resulted in a punt which was air-mailed to the Longhorn 10.
5:23 P.M. McCoy uses a quarterback sneak to gain another Texas first down. The game has really slowed down since the first two drives. Texas went Bill Cowher and Ken Whisenhunt and tried a reverse pass from wideout Quan Crosby. The pass from Crosby sailed about 40 yards but was incomplete. I was surprised by the throw. Then again, so was Mike Holmgren.
5:27 P.M. Texas punts, but gives it to ASU at their own 47.
5:31 P.M. On first down, ASU gives up a fumble as junior tailback Keegan Herring coughs it up. The fumble was challenged by the booth, but nothing would come of it.
5:33 P.M. Texas must feel comfortable. Really comfortable. Using only two plays, the Longhorns scored another touchdown. On the first play Jamaal Charles broke two tackles up the sidelines and went for 48 yards. On the very next play, backup QB John Chiles rushed it in from 4 yards deep. 14-0 Texas. Let the Vince Young comparisons begin now. From the minute Chiles stepped on the field, a run was obvious. It didn’t matter.
5:40 P.M. ASU gained a first down again when they took over, but another turnover would haunt the the Sun Devils. ASU QB Rudy Carpenter sailed one deep down field, but a favorable bounce off an ASU receiver’s hands would get gnabbed Longhorn safety Marcus Griffin.
5:44 P.M. McCoy has apparently received some juke move practice from LaDainian Tomlinson while in San Diego. McCoy was swerving and swaying off Sun Devils to get a 9 yard rush in what could be the longest 9 yard gain in Holiday Bowl history.
5:46 P.M. Texas fails to get a first down and they have to punt it away.
5:48 P.M. Without going to commercial break, ASU again displays their hatred for offense. Avoiding the running game, the Sun Devils punt it away.
5:49pm Colt McCoy must want MVP of this game as his 55 yard bomb down field led to a 15 yard touchdown run by Jamaal Charles. As Charles celebrated, he gave the fans in San Diego an LT salute. This, drive just like their last drive, only lasted two plays. 21-0 Texas.
5:55pm End of Quarter #1. Texas leads 21-0.
