The Poinsettia Bowl Blog Roll: The Second Quarter

Taking over the duties from Kevin and Rich I will now do my best to make you feel like you’re inside Qualcomm Stadium for the first game of this bowl season.
Navy opened up the second quarter by continuing their drive that began in the previous quarter. Within the first minute of the quarter Navy drove into Utah territory which eventually lead to a field goal attempt. Senior place kicker Joey Bullen lined up for the 50 yard try that sailed wide left.
Both Utah and Navy have easily moved the ball into the opposition’s part of the field, but it was the Utes who finally made something out of it with 8:42 left to go in the half. Darrell Mack had only 20 yards rushing in the first quarter, but he finished the first Ute drive of the second quarter with 64 yards and a 5 yard touchdown run. The drive took 5:33 off the clock on 11 plays for 67 yards.
7-0 Utah.
Meanwhile in the press box, legendary radio personalities from San Diego clashed. Lee “Hacksaw” Hamilton of XTRA Sports 1360am decided to chat it up with Coach John Kentera of XX Sports Radio (1090am & 105.7fm). I expected a brawl, yet the two seem to be friends. Damnit!
Navy didn’t take a liking to Utah scoring first in the game so they responded with a heavy dose of rushing. Runs of 14 and 11 yards to go along with a couple more short gains lead to a Midshipmen rushing touchdown from junior quarterback Kaipo-Noa Kaheaku-Enhada. The drive began at the Navy 30 and took 3:22 from the clock during 8 plays.
7-7 with 5:09 to go in the first half.
When Utah received the kick off, they stalled immediately. The Utes went three and out, and gave the ball back to the Midshipmen at midfield. Navy again began to run as they did in their previous drive to effectively move into Ute territory. After a few runs, Navy was awarded a pass interference penalty which gave them a first down at the Ute 28. The Midshipmen were stopped from their, yet senior place kicker Joey Bullen had a chance to redeem himself with another kick. The snap for the 39 yard attempt was about to happen before Utah head coach Kyle Wittingham pulled a Mike Shanahan and called a timeout. Bullen wasn’t bothered by any distraction as he nailed home the go ahead field goal with 28 seconds left.
10-7 Navy. Halftime.
