Cory Redding is probably one of the ten best defensive tackles in football. But according to the Lions, Redding is the best defensive tackle…ever. The Lions resigned him to a seven year contract worth $49 million, the highest contract in the league for a defensive tackle. Detroit hopes that they can build a strong foundation with Redding and fellow DT Shaun Rogers, provided he’s not fat and lazy.
The Philadelphia Phillies reached a dubious mark last night, losing the 10,000th game in their franchise history. The Braves have over 300 losses to go to join them at that mark. Best of all, their blowout loss was nationally televised on ESPN. Very good timing by the Worldwide Leader, which allowed us to, once again, point and laugh at Philadelphia.
In case you missed it, Copa America wrapped up yesterday, as Brazil’s B-Team destroyed Argentina 3-0. The scoring got started in the 3rd minute and Brazil never let up. Not bad for a squad that didn’t include superstars like Ronaldhino, Kaka, Adriano, and Ronaldo. With the win, Brazil joined Italy and the United States in the 2009 Confederations Cup.
Barry Bonds hasn’t homered since July 2nd and is mired in one of the worst slumps of his career. Hitless in his last 20 at-bats, Bonds will be held out of the starting lineup tonight in the opener of a four game set with the red-hot Cubs.
Seve Ballesteros, a five-time major champion, announced his retirement from the game of golf today, calling it the hardest decision of his life. The announcement falls on the week of the British Open at Carnoustie.
