With the New York Yankees now 11 games out of first place at 37-40, they’re starting to resort to some desperate measures? Signing Sandy Koufax? Not quite. Lighting their own shit on fire? Absolutely. After the Yankees’ loss yesterday, relief pitcher Scott Proctor carried his gear to the field and proceeded to light all of it on fire.
“It was all just a joke, man, I mean really,” Proctor said Sunday. “Just something I’ve done in the past.”
Is it, Scott? Is it? Whenever you’re struggled, you just light things on fire? That takes the term “fireman,” usually reserved for closers, to a whole new level. I don’t think I would want a pyro on my team, especially when we’re struggling as bad as the Yankees are. Proctor’s antics come after he gave up three runs in just a third of an inning yesterday.
If there’s any consolation to this story, it’s that Proctor did pitch well today. He came in for mop-up duty in another Yankees loss and pitched well, retiring four straight batters and lowering his season ERA below four. Maybe Andy Pettite should light something on fire. He was tagged for seven runs and nine hits in just 1 2/3 innings.

I think it’s a great story! Proctor got the evil spirits out of the pinstripes. I love it!
I’m not so happy about it…but that’s probably because they beat the Twins yesterday, and look poised to beat us again tonight, apparently Proctor’s little trick worked…
