Jon Kitna is Overestimating the Lions

Posted by ryan on June 25, 2007

jon-pickna.JPGWhen you look at potential surprise teams in the NFL, you’d probably take a look at teams like the San Francisco 49ers or maybe even the Buffalo Bills. One team you wouldn’t think twice about? The Detroit Lions. Quarterback Jon Kitna, coming off a season where he threw 22 interceptions, wants you to think otherwise. Kitna is wrongly boldly predicting big things for the Lions. How does 10 wins sound?

In March, Kitna said the Lions would win 10 games in 2007, but after seeing the team’s schedule he adjusted his prediction — higher.

“I’ll keep to myself what I think we actually will win. But it’s more than 10 games,” Kitna said.

Kitna’s main reasoning behind this sudden Lions resurgence was rookie receiver Calvin Johnson, who has been wowing everyone in offseason workouts. He even went as far as saying his hands were “like tennis rackets.” Wouldn’t that mean the balls just bounce off his hands, ala the Seattle Seahawks? That’s a strange simile. In fact, it doesn’t make an ounce of sense.

So does Pickna Kitna have any point behind this statement? The only direction for this team to go is up. After all, they were 3-13 last year and have some very dangerous offensive weapons. But the Lions have to play teams from the NFC East and AFC West, two of the deepest divisions in football. I think six or seven wins is reachable. But to predict double digit wins is a sign of drug abuse.

Funny that you would be cracking on the Seahawks for dropping passes, a team that humiliated the Raiders on Monday Night Football last season with backups at quarterback, running back and most of the offensive line!

Thanks for not reminding me how the Seahawks and their starting QB, RB and O-Line just squeeked by the Kitna-lead Lionesses in the season opener last year!

That game was ugly. 9-6, if I remember correctly.

I do think the Lions will make some improvements. They play in a pretty weak division and have some nice weapons. But damn, they’re not close to ten win caliber.
