10. Albert Haynesworth. The first entry in the Cheap Shot Hall of Shame goes to Titans defensive tackle Albert Haynesworth, who stomped on the face of a Dallas Cowboys player. Sometime during the play, Andre Gurode lost his helmet and paid the price.
9. Craig Bellamy. Much like a later entry on this list, Bellamy’s attack wasn’t directed towards an opponent but a teammate. Following a night on the town, a drunken Bellamy raged into teammate John Arne Riise’s room and attacked his legs with a golf club. The following week, he parodied the incident while celebrating a goal.
8. Zinedine Zidane. This could also qualify for one of the most badass send-offs in sports history. Zidane, an all-time great, was given a red card in the final of the 2006 World Cup. In the final match of his career, Zidane gave the entire world something to talk about.
7. Mike Tyson. The chomping of Evander Holyfield’s ear overshadowed one of the most anticipated fights in history. Following Holyfield’s victory over Tyson in November of 1996, the rematch was set for June of 1997. In the third round of the fight, Tyson became even more infamous. He was DQ’d and Holyfield kept the title.
6. White Goodman. Ben Stiller’s character in Dodgeball, White Goodman, also took part in a brutal cheap shot. In the nationally televised championship game of the Las Vegas International Dodgeball Open, Goodman pegs Kate for no reason at all. She had already been eliminated but took a ball to the face anyway.
5. Sean Taylor. Taylor makes this list because he blew up a Brian Moorman during the Pro Bowl. This hit was clean, but then again it was on a punter during the Pro Bowl so it makes it somewhat hard to justify. Regardless, it was a great hit, I just know there are a lot of people who don’t feel like it was necessary.
4. Mitch Cozad. No one has ever heard of Cozad because he’s a backup punter for Northern Colorado. He’s the player who stabbed his teammate in the leg in a desperate attempt to move ahead of him on the depth chart. This takes cheap shots to a whole new level as it was off the field and involved a deadly weapon.
3. Izzy Alcantara. Alcantara is former baseball player who is only known for one thing: kicking an opposing catcher in the chest protector before charging the mound after a pitch that Alcantara took exception to. The attack came out of nowhere as the pitch was seemingly nowehre close. Here’s the video.
2. Marty McSorley. McSorley probably has an unfair advantage here simply because he had a weapon. The stick to anyone’s skull is going to hurt a whole lot but this level of violence was unprecedented in hockey. No one would have ever thought this would happen, and because of this, it has earned the two spot.
1. Todd Bertuzzi. The Todd Bertuzzi hit earns the number one spot basically because of shock value. Bertuzzi’s hit was simply brutal, he just came up from behind and went with the sucker punch. There was absolutely no balls involved in this shot, and let’s face it, any hockey player who gets a square shot to your temple will put you down.

Zidane’s cheap shot was amazing, it actually made the match more interesting. Soccer would definitely have a wider following in the US if there were more incidents like that. I’m a little disappointed that Dennis Rodman kicking that camera guy in the junk didn’t make it on the list…I know it wasn’t against an athlete, but it was still pretty cheap. Along the same lines, Chris Kaman getting grabbed down there by Reggie Evans probably should get some sort of honorable mention
This top 10 is missing Marcus Vick stepping on that guy’s leg.
I was pushing for Jermaine O’Neal rearranging that fans face to make the list, it didn’t quite make the cut however. The Kaman and Rodman incidents are also sorely lacking. The Kaman one especially.
How do you forget the Dodger-Giant game in the 60s when Juan Marichal hit Dodger catcher John Roseborro in the head with the bat? If that doesn’t make it, what is the world coming to? Maybe you guys weren’t looking deep enough.
The Kaman thing is great. It takes a few seconds to register that yes, Reggie Evans actually grabs his sack. He responds appropriately.
