Here’s a hilarious fudging of payroll by the Philadelphia Eagles accounting team. Apparently the Eagles paid running back Brian Westbrook his $3 million signing bonus twice, and nobody in accounting noticed.
Westbrook has been one of the most underrated backs in the league since he broke in with the Eagles in 2002. Westbrook, who is one of the rare blends of a receiving and rushing back, resigned with the Eagles in 2005 and, because of the accounting screw up, got paid twice in 2006. What does this mean for the Eagles? Salary Cap hit.
The Eagles have filed a grievance to the league to try and get their money back and it is anticipated that they will in fact be repaid the $3 million extra they gave. In other words, the Eagles screwed up and now they want their money back and it appears as if Westbrook is willing to give it back.
If I was in that situation, I’d be holding on to that extra dough. Listen, it’s not my fault that some big wig with a desk job and a nice computer can’t count to 3 twice. Give the money to charity. Invest it in one of the literally hundreds of charitable organizations started by NFL players. Make the United Way happy. At least he isn’t taking his extra couple mill to the casino.
