Top 10 Michael Jordan Commercials
Posted by ryan on April 13, 2007Earlier today, we received an email from the Fanbash about a fantastic list of Tiger Woods’ commercials. This gave me a good idea to compile some great commercials of the original Nike God, Michael Jordan. They range from a release in the 1980s to ones put out just a year or two ago. Nike, Gatorade, and McDonalds all have their fair share of great ones. Enjoy.
10. This commercial was actually shot in 1993, several years before Space Jam was released. But it definitely foreshadowed a long-lasting friendship between Air Jordan and “Hare” Jordan. Bugs Bunny is getting punked by five nameless scrubs until he’s rescued by MJ.
9. I had actually never seen this commercial, another one with Spike Lee. You have to love the cheap shot at Sam Bowie. Somewhere, someone is practicing to become the next MJ. But who?
8. These sure beat the hell out of the Kevin Garnett Milk Man. I’d say this is pretty effective advertising. You’re staring at the product for 15 seconds and then the last 15 seconds are clips of Michael Jordan owning. Works for me.
7. It seems like a crime to put this great commercial so high on the list. But that shows you how many good ones he’s done. This video also represents Jordan’s career because the things he did just made people stop what they were doing. Whenever a commercial is in slow motion, it probably owns.
6. It’s ironic to see Spike Lee in a couple Jordan commercials, considering His Airness made Lee’s life as a Knicks fan a living hell throughout his career. Jordan always saved his finest performances for the Knicks and Spike. “It’s gotta be the shoes.” Between that and #4, Jordan’s commercials have definitely produced some popular phrases.
5. If this isn’t motivation, I’m not sure what is. The commercial is a more personal look at Jordan, shot while he’s walking past people in a tunnel. He’s missed 9,000 shots, 26 game-winners, and lost over 300 games. If Michael Jordan’s failure can’t motivate you, I don’t know what can.
4. This is an all-time classic, shot in 1992. It was accompanied by its own corny theme song, “Like Mike.” We’re still waiting on someone to be like Mike. I don’t see it happening anytime soon.
3. Here’s a classic showdown between Michael Jordan and Larry Bird, rivals throughout the 1980s. Bird and Jordan play a game of Horse for a Big Mac. Off the floor, off the scoreboard, off the backboard, no rim. You have to love Jordan’s hideous clothes as well.
2. This is one of the more recent commercials made in honor of Jordan. It was released to promote the Jordan XXI shoes. Jordan appears in the commercial for only a couple of seconds, the rest is young players paying tribute to his memorable moments. The shrug, the jumper over Ehlo, and the game-winner in 1998 are all here.
1. My all-time favorite Michael Jordan commercial is called “23 vs. 39,” where a younger Jordan plays an older version of MJ. It represents his entire career: the younger Jordan shows off his powerful dunks, the older Jordan dominates with fade-aways. At the end of the commercial, an even younger Jordan from North Carolina shows up, challenging the other two to a game.
