Ozzie Goes to War with McCarthy

guillen-choke-custom.jpgThe grass is green, the sun is shining, and Ozzie Guillen is exchanging insults with a former player. All is well in the world of Major League Baseball. Screw the HGH accusations (I’m looking at you Jerry Hairston Jr.). If Ozzie Guillen is owning Brandon McCarthy, I’m all for it. When McCarthy mouthed off about the “positive environment” in the Rangers’ clubhouse, Guillen struck.

”The second [Rangers general manager] Jon Daniels called me, it was just a different attitude right off the bat,” McCarthy said. ”[With the Sox] I was constantly hearing, ‘This is what we don’t like. This is what we think you are doing wrong. This is what’s bad. This is bad.’ It always seemed to be focused on the negative. Here, it’s just, ‘Here is your spot, and we expect you to do well, and we think the world of you. Let’s see you go do it.’

Say what you want about Ozzie Guillen but he’s turned the White Sox around in a hurry. He took a team that was mired in middle-of-the-pack finishes and took them to a World Series championship. Texas may have a more positive environment but they’re sure as hell not winning World Series titles. After hearing McCarthy’s comments, Guillen responded in a frenzy.

”I don’t want to talk about Mac because he made a couple of comments — I really hate him,” Guillen told North. ”I don’t like the comments he made about our clubhouse, about our players, about [us] negative people here. There’s one thing about Ozzie Guillen: Ozzie Guillen is never negative. He forgot he lost a couple of games for us. He lost at least five of the 72. We might be in the playoffs without him.”

Brandon McCarthy, you’ve been owned. But it could have been worse. Guillen never called out McCarthy’s orientation. Jay Mariotti wasn’t so fortunate last year. Guillen may be a prick, he may be an ass. But he’s sure as hell entertaining. Guillen drove McCarthy back where he belonged: the world of irrelevance.

I fucking love Ozzie.

I understand that a lot of people can’t stand him, and I understand why, but if he was managing their team, odds are they’d love him.

There’s a reason his players love him. Even McCarthy called him on Friday night to apologize and clear things up.
