Sonny’s Stylewatch: City Series Hat Goes…Ballin’
Posted by sonny on January 11, 2007
I did a feature on the original “City Series” hat a while back. Since then, the New Era Cap Company has decided to bust out some other models as well. They’ve now unveiled a new set of NBA City Series hats. I think the idea from New Era to put an entire skyline on a hat is extremely cool. Now that they have created and made hats for most Major League Baseball teams, it was time to start releasing some for the NBA.
If you dig the New York skyline and like the Knicks (for some odd reason), buy the Knicks hat. The skyline of New York is exactly the same as the baseball hat. But don’t stop yourself from getting one with the Knicks’ logo on it. Staying in the Atlantic Division, the Boston Celtics also get a hat. I really like the way the green and the logo on the lower right side go together to form an instant classic cap.
Let’s stay in the Eastern Conference, as the Indiana Pacers also get a hat made in their honor. The hat comes in 3 colors, but the blue with the yellow has to be the one that is purchased. Up next is the Pistons and the city of Detroit. I’m telling you right now: don’t buy this one. The color of the skyline’s stitching is incredibly hard to see and won’t turn many heads. There is a 2nd hat, but that one doesn’t display the skyline well either. Maybe they should try to stitch a picture of the Palace on the front. That will definitely turn heads.
Moving out west to Texas, New Era created hats for the Mavs, Spurs, and Rockets. The Mavericks have a really cool skyline and it’s displayed on the front of their hat. The abundant amount of buildings in Dallas makes the cap really stand out. Abundant amount of buildings in San Antonio is not the case however. The Spurs hat lacks density but the Tower of the Americas building stands out. The Rockets hat also looks pretty generic. To me it looks like the typical skyline; but if you’re from the area and support the Rockets, I would strongly suggest it.
It’s time to head to the Pacific Conference and check out the Lakers and the Suns hats. The Suns‘ hat almost jumps out at you. The old-school Suns logo on the lower right hand side adds a great touch to an already awesome hat. The Lakers hat simply screams fashion. The Los Angeles skyline is well depicted. The inclusion of a palm tree adds a great touch. If you think think the skyline is not visible enough, go ahead and purchase the other Laker hat, where the skyline is clearly showing.
With the City Series design, New Era has created more than a hat. It’s created a symbol to represent a city. Some cities also have hats created for their teams, so look in your nearest Lids stores. If you like these hats, come back next week for a feature on the new NBA GPS hats.
