I never hesitate to call a professional athlete irrelevant. In the case of John Thomson, he is irrelevant. I can guarantee I would never write about this douchebag if he didn’t come out and smack talk another player. But he did. So now, he’s fair game. Thomson declined an offer from the New York Mets and signed with the Toronto Blue Jays because he didn’t want to pitch to Mets catcher Paul Lo Duca.
“As far as just looking at Paul Lo Duca across the field, I’m not really into how he acts behind the plate,” Thomson said on a conference call. “I know a bit about (Toronto catcher) Gregg Zaun and I know he wants to win and he’s not going to let anything get in his way to do that, and I like that.
Why in the hell would you take Gregg Zaun’s side? What the hell has Zaun done with his career? He’s a 35 year old journeyman with a couple of average seasons to his credit north of the border. Lo Duca, on the other hand, is a gamer. He’s made four straight All Star games and he’s a proven leader in the clubhouse.
Everyone knows Lo Duca has a temper. But Thomson preferred Zaun because “he wants to win.” You’re telling me Lo Duca doesn’t like winning. For somebody as useless as Thomson to call out Lo Duca is pretty random. The Mets-Blue Jays rivalry is heated enough, we don’t need anymore tension there.
Thompson should look at his own numbers first. Gregg Zaun may like winning but Thomson apparently doesn’t. That 2-7 record in 2006 is proof enough. The highlight of his season was a 1-2-3 inning in mop-up duty last September. Apparently that means he can still pitch. Unless Thomson plans on becoming B.J. Ryan’s set-up guy, maybe he should try working a few more innings without getting shelled.
Maybe Thomson just hates Italians. Lo Duca is Italian. Zaun, by all accounts, probably isn’t. Unfortunately, Zaun doesn’t know how to pick them. There’s tons of Italians in Toronto. If we hear of a Molotov Cocktail being flung in Toronto, it’s probably Thomson’s doing. I doubt it’ll do any damage, it’ll probably get hit 500 feet away once he releases it.
