Sidney Crosby is Owning and Nobody Cares

sidney-crosby-custom.jpgIf Sidney Crosby has six points in a game and leads the NHL in scoring but nobody sees or notices it, is it really happening? That’s up to you to decide. But after Crosby’s career-high six points in last night’s win, he’s assumed the lead in points for the NHL. He’s scored 41 points in 26 games this season, which is probably better than what the average 19 year old is doing with their life at this point.

It’s not that I don’t like the NHL; I find the NHL Playoffs to be one of the best things to watch. It’s that I never think to turn on games, mainly because I forget what channel they’re on. Do you know what Versus is? It used to be the Outdoor Life Network but changed it up a few months ago. It broadcasts a lot of Mountain West Conference football and basketball and doesn’t do a very good job of it. It might have some good programming (including the Barbecue Championship Series) but it’s not in my channel-surfing rotation yet.

NHL games may be drawing big crowds in sold-out arenas but for the casual follower, it’s hard to stay informed of hockey news. Game highlights are rarely shown on ESPN and we get few clips of analysis from Barry Melrose, which, considering his mullet, might not be a bad thing. I haven’t watched a single second of NHL games because the marketing has gone to hell and the sport has basically been shunned from the American sports spotlight.

We may be lacking in NHL coverage these days but at least we’re trying. We just need to hit up Versus a little more to catch a couple of games. It’s an exciting time in the NHL with the huge number of great young players. And if your fantasy football team is struggling, you can always turn to fantasy hockey. With that said, I’m proud to say the Toothless Russians are in 5th place despite me not knowing what the hell is happening in the NHL.
