Stop Using -Gate

Posted by ryan on December 13, 2006

nixon.jpgA lot of reaction has come out of the Miami Dolphins’ 21-0 domination of the New England Patriots this week. People are now calling it “Tape-gate” after the Dolphins used game film with audio as a way to get Tom Brady’s audible calls. I’ve heard this phrase used a lot and I’m getting pissed off about it.

It’s time to ax any events with the ending of -gate. It’s annoying and nothing besides the original Watergate makes sense, seeing as how Watergate was a damn hotel. “Ball-Gate” was a stupid way to describe the NBA ball controversy and “Tape-Gate” is an idiotic way of describing this controversy, especially when it isn’t a controversy to begin with. What’s next? “Cut-off HoodyGate?”

It seems like whenever something happens that stays in the news, it automatically becomes tagged with the -Gate suffix. Michael Strahan’s broken sack record automatically became “Sack-Gate.” The headbutt by Zinedine Zidane, also known as the most badass thing in sports history, was named “Headbutt Gate”. Of course, the Janet Jackson “Wardrobe Malfunction” got crowned with a -Gate ending. The possibilities were endless for that one:

  • Tit-Gate
  • Pasty-Gate
  • Shitty Halftime Show-Gate
  • Nip-Gate
  • Timber-Gate
  • Gonna Have You Naked By The End of This Song-Gate
  • Jacko-Gate
  • Thank God it wasn’t Michael’s Tit-Gate

It’s a simple request, really. Stop coming up with stupid and catchy titles for events, especially when they use -Gate. A simple “Dolphins Tape Controversy” would have done justice. It’s not worth tiring out a crappy phrase, especially when it pisses me off as a result.

[...] I came across an article on AOL’s Sports Blog regarding something I didn’t see on Saturday. Florida’s close win over Kentucky, had a bit of controversy to it. It involved Joakim Noah and a Kentucky cheerleader. TV cameras have shown a UK cheerleader apparently taunting Noah with her pom-pom after he took a spill near the baseline. The article also used the description of “Pom-Pom Gate,” which I happen to despise. [...]
