That’s right, the Rutgers Scarlet Knights are 9-0 and in the hunt for a national championship. Ignoring all the BCS controversy that is sure to take place, congratulations to Rutgers. It wasn’t more than a few years ago that this team was one of the laughing stocks of college football. Now they’ve turned it around, and last night managed a 28-25 victory over Louisville, the #3 ranked team in the nation. This puts Rutgers atop the Big East, and one of four undefeated teams left in college football.
They have a great young player in Ray Rice, who will most likely go unnoticed because of the fact that he is a mere 5′ 9″ tall. Don’t let that fool you though, he is averaging over 150 yards per game. Rice is the main offensive threat, and the combination this dominant run game, and a stellar defense allows Rutgers to control the games that they play, and thus win. While Rice may be considered too small to have been touted a top recruit, or even a top NFL prospect he is showing that he can thrive at the college level, and that’s really all that matters.
I was a huge Rutgers fan last year, not because they were a good team, in fact, I think I may have only seen one of their games. No, I was a fan because they covered the point spread like it was their duty. They were almost always included in my parlays, and very rarely let me down. I’m not going to say that I called Rutgers being a good team, I didn’t. It’s just nice to see a team that I rode so hard last year having success, and rolling through the Big East.
I know we’ll hear the critics talking about the fact that Rutgers hasn’t played anyone. But I really don’t care, and I hope the Rutgers players don’t either. They just beat the #3 team in the nation, and on December 2nd they have a chance to beat West Virginia, currently ranked #10. If they do that, then they should have earned all the respect that they need. If Rutgers finishes the year undefeated, which I am hoping, then they should earn a shot at the national title. I’m officially on the Scarlet Knights bandwagon, plus if they get screwed out of the #2 spot, I have even more reason to bitch about how bad the BCS is.
