Sonny’s Stylewatch: NFL Retros
Posted by sonny on November 9, 2006As a jersey fanatic, I look forward to each NFL season and the retro jerseys that certain teams wear. They bring back memories and colors that teams once wore to represent their franchises. Some teams don’t have retro jerseys, which may be because of the teams short history or relocation, and many NFL teams wear their retro jerseys only once during the year, but that doesn’t mean we can’t enjoy them when they’re around. Today I will go through each division in the NFL and grade teams on their retro jerseys.
NFC West
San Francisco 49ers: B+
The Niners retro uniforms have probably seen more Super Bowls then the any other retro jersey in the league. The cardinal red jersey was worn by the 49ers in all of their Super Bowl victories. So you can bet when these things come out fans are reminded of the glory days. Lets not forget the gold pants the jersey goes with. The pants compliment the cardinal red top and make the complete jersey look sharp.
NFC North
Detroit Lions: C+
One of the main reasons I tune into football on Thanksgiving Day is because I want to make sure I can bash the Lions retro uni’s. The old school jerseys only come out once a year and thats probably a good thing. The jerseys are neat and everything, but they’re too plain for me. Solid color pants, solid color jerseys, and solid color helmets. I completely understand that this jersey is a retro, but it just seems a little to flat for me.
NFC East
Dallas Cowboys: B
Another Thanksgiving Day tradition, the Cowboys taking the field with their retro uniforms. There are a couple of things that set this jersey apart from other retros. I like the upper part of the jersey where the two Dallas Cowboys stars appear on each shoulder. When the Cowboys where these on Thanksgiving Day look out for the throwback helmet too.
Washington Redskins: C
I just think that the Redskins retro jersey looks too much like the current ones. The only thing that is different about the current jersey is that it contains no arrows on the shoulders and the gold trim becomes yellow. I really don’t know why the Redskins even decide to go with the jersey for 1 week out of the season. If the Redskins actually wake up one day and realize this they should start wearing these retros instead.
NFC South
New Orleans Saints: A-
I can’t wait for the New Orleans Saints to have throwback day at the Superdome. I know the jerseys are from the Archie Manning days, but how good do they look now? I love the way the sleeves are striped with white and gold, plus I love the way the gold doesn’t stand out. Usually when you see gold on a jersey it stands out and says “bling”. However, on this jersey, like the Niners retro, the gold sets itself within the black and it doesn’t shout out at you.
AFC West
San Diego Chargers: A+
Let’s start out by saying that the San Diego Chargers retro jersey is the best throwback jersey in all of football. You can’t compare this jersey to any other in the league. The powder blue color sets it apart from all others. One attribute that the jersey has is the lightning bolt on the shoulders. The bolt is placed within a white stripe that provides a nice break and accent to the powder blue. Can I also point out how great the white pants and the helmet are as well. The Chargers like this jersey so much they wear it twice every year and there is even a push to get it the regular jersey. If you find a better retro please comment and try to out style the Chargers.
AFC East
Buffalo Bills: B
The Bills brought back this retro early in the 2005 season and actually wore it for their first few games on their schedule. I really like the blue and how it is lighter than the blue that is on the current jerseys. I also like the stripes on the sleeves, just the Saints did with their retro jersey. If you’re a Bills fan, I would suggest buying this jersey with a name and number on it rather than ones they wear the rest of the season.
