There’s a New Name in Golf Course Design

by kevin on November 7, 2006

As if dominating everyone on the PGA Tour wasn’t enough, Tiger Woods is now going to dominate weekend hackers everywhere. Tiger has decided to create his own golf course design firm, “Tiger Woods Design.” I can’t even imagine the challenge of playing a Tiger Woods designed course.

We’ve seen the legends design great courses, and do a great job doing it. Nicklaus, Player, and Palmer all have moved onto designing courses and have had great success. I wonder if Tiger will have the same success? Are his courses just going to be insanely long? Or are they going to be covered in bunkers forcing target golf? A mix of both maybe? It should be interesting to see someone who has so thoroughly dominated so many courses finally make his own.

This raises a major question for me though. Tiger has always said he is 100% focused on his career, is he going to stop worrying so much about playing and start designing? He even had his commercial that claimed that he never took a day off. So why start a design company during what seems to be the prime of his career? He certainly doesn’t need the money and he doesn’t need the fame. He’s only 30 years old, why didn’t he just wait until he was 50?

Is this just a big pride thing? Does Tiger really have to be the best at everything? Can’t he just be content with whooping ass on the PGA Tour? I’m excited to see what Tiger Woods Design does, but at the same time, I’m questioning whether or not this is a good idea. I guess we will find out in the next few years as we see his projects come to light and his career unfold.
