College Football Best Bets for 11-4-06

jamarcus-custom.jpgSo far, I’ve prevented myself from looking like a complete idiot in this column, going a respectable 8-4. There’s not many premier matchups but the headliner of the day, LSU vs. Tennessee, should be one of the season’s best. And it also offers an appealing play for you betters out there reading this column.

LSU vs. Tennessee Under 44: When I thought about this game without looking at the lines, I figured the over/under would be about 37 or so. But we’re getting that plus another touchdown, which are always hard to come by in big SEC games. LSU has the nation’s best defense and only allows 8.3 points a game. Tennessee quarterback Erik Ainge will play but isn’t near 100% because of an ankle injury. 8 of LSU’s last 11 games have gone under the total. SEC games have a knack for being intense and low scoring. I don’t expect this one to be any different.

Washington +16.5 over Oregon: Sure, the Huskies are only 4-5. But more importantly, they’re a good cover team. They’ve already gone into hostile environments against Cal and USC and could have won both. Playing at Autzen Stadium isn’t going to intimidate them either. Tyrone Willingham will have his team ready; he has no choice. The Huskies need every win they can get to try and become bowl eligible.

BYU -15 over Colorado State: Few teams have been as good as BYU when it comes to sports betting. Not only are they dominating the Mountain West Conference, they’re also 7-1 against the spread. Their only loss with the spread was at Boston College, where they may have pushed or lost by half a point depending on what sportsbook you use. These teams are going in opposite directions. The Mormons have won five in a row and covered in every single one of them, while Colorado State has lost three in a row. They haven’t scored less than 30 points during their winning streak and I expect it to continue.

San Jose State -6.5 over New Mexico State: Don’t look now but San Jose State is one game away from being bowl eligible. This is a team that hasn’t made a bowl game since 1990. Unfortunately, it’s also a team that hasn’t won a road game since 2003. But don’t worry, their opponent hasn’t beat a D-1 team since 2004. San Jose State has something to play for in this one and the Aggies don’t. I can’t see them slipping up here. If you’re scared, just tease them for a straight up win.
