The Comedy that is Band Hazing

by ryan on October 13, 2006

wisconsin-helmet.jpgI found this story almost too good to be true. Wisconsin’s band was put on probation for hazing new members. The hazing involved drunken antics that included sex. And apparently, this band is pretty infamous. Because of frequent abuse, Wisconsin sets aside additional money so that the cheerleading and dance teams can travel on separate busses. Are the akward comments made by the trumpet squad really that brutal? They must be.

Using simple stereotypes one learns in high school, you classify band members as nerds that are the nice guys in a crowd. Meanwhile, football players are the ones that cheerleaders and dancers should avoid. But Wisconsin is just a bit ass-backwards. After all, they choose to ignore the perception that running backs shouldn’t be fat.
Band hazing at Wisconsin included forcing a new member to shave his head and others to dance semi-nude. I can imagine what other hazing activities were done. Playing the fight song without taking a second breath, playing Mozart backwards, three straight hours of marching in the snow wearing just the goofy band hat.

Common band member stereotype would represent something out of American Pie. The band members that wanted to party were turned away with a blatant lie by Stiffler. Times have changed. What the hell is next? Chess club hazing? Sodomizing newbies with pawns? This is a great example of why this site was launched. The great stories never end.

Since when is getting drunk, shaving heads, dancing semi-nude, disrobing, and sexualized banter considered sex? Back in the day this and more was standard behavior.
